I've Been Here All My Life

2022

Detroit, MI

The Visiting Room Project was created to let the public see and hear from people in prison sharing about their lives after decades of incarceration. Here, we hear from Sammie Robinson, who was sent to Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, when he was 17 years old. Sammie died in Angola in 2019, when he was 83 years old. During his interview for The Visiting Room Project, Sammie was asked to describe the worst part about being in prison now. He responded, “The worst thing is being in prison this long… I’ve been here all my life. I ain’t never really had a chance to get out, because I’ve been here all my life.”
