Chaos or Community?

2020

Denver, CO

“Chaos or community” are the last words in the last chapter of the last book Martin Luther King, Jr. published before he was assassinated. They are a prophetic question each generation must ask itself: how will we choose to make the future? The book, “Where do we go from here?”, pointed a path toward the kind of affirmative, constructive action needed then and raised questions still relevant today. The new Four Freedoms — listening, healing, awakening and justice — situate King’s questions within ourselves. We are each faced with choices between peace and coannihilation in our daily lives as well as in the momentous decisions we make for our collective wellbeing. As King says in the book’s appendix, we cannot afford to make any of these choices poorly.
