Ancestral Whispers

2021

San Antonio, TX

How does a tree remember?
Its leaves fall from the branches
onto the ground
where its roots are twisted and tangled.
Their crisp veins fracture,
embedded into the damp soil,
their DNA transfused back into the tree’s body.

How do you remember,
as you walk on this earth,
your feet softly and firmly on the ground?
You carry on your shoulder
within your body
the DNA of your ancestors,
the weight of their stories
heavy but strengthening.

Listen to them,
whispers from our ancestors.
